The Municipality of Brighton has recently restructured and renamed the Citizen of the Year Award. This change was endorsed by the Community Events Committee and was part of a larger review and restructuring of the program to encourage more participation among residents. The committee felt it was important to change the name of the award to more accurately reflect the award's essence of – “an all-round outstanding resident who has gone above and beyond in contributing to the well-being of our municipality and its members for multiple years” – and to ensure that all residents, both lifelong residents and recent Brightonians, who have made a significant impact in our community, felt reflected and included. Moving forward, the Citizen of the Year Award will now be called the Community Service Excellence Award.
Further changes to the award program include a second layer of recognition has been added to capture the range of volunteerism activities in Brighton - from doing a single good deed, to a lifetime dedicated to serving the community. Spirit of Service Awards will be selected by the selection committee and be awarded to those who are nominated for but are not chosen to be the receipient of the Community Service Excellence Award.
