Register for the Mayor's 14th Annual Keep the County Clean Challenge

Spring is fast approaching, and this year the Municipality of Brighton is once again participating in Northumberland County’s “Keep the County Challenge”. In it's 14th year, the Challenge will run from Sunday, April 21st th to Saturday, April 27th communities across the County. The Challenge is aimed at cleaning up litter from parks, roadside ditches, nature trails and neighbourhoods.

Last year, Brighton had 450 volunteers participate in the challenge respresenting schools, community groups and neighbourhoods.This year, the Municipality of Brighton has a goal of having 500 community members participate in the challenge.

To participate in the Challenge, participants are required to register their party and proposed-clean-up area, and complete the County’s Waiver Form. Supplies will be available for pick-up at the Municipality of Brighton’s Administration Building at 35 Alice Street, Public Works Building at 67 Sharp Road and the Brighton and Codrington Branches of the Library.

Northumberland County Keep the County Clean Challenge Health & Safety Guidelines

Volunteers must:

• be at least 12 years old when cleaning on road ways
• children under the age of 12 must be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times and can only attend clean up in park areas
• provide at least 1 adult (19 years or older) supervisor for every 5 workers
• always wear a Safety Vest along the roadsides
• park parallel to the road and as far off of the travelled portion as possible
• park vehicles on the same side of the roadway/street as the volunteers
• clean-up only one side of the road/street at a time and work towards oncoming traffic
• drive to opposite side of the roadway when switching sides
• pick up litter during daylight hours only
• stay clean of any maintenance or construction operations and equipment 
• stay clear of water hazards
• discontinue work in inclement weather
• place filled trash bags at the pickup site(s) designated by your local Municipality

Volunteers will not:

• walk or pick up litter on the payvement and shoulders
• work on bridges, overpasses, steep ground, or in tunnels
• walk across pavement to switch sides
• touch or pick up any hazardous items or anything that cannot be identified
• wear clothing or display material that might distract motorists
• use or possess illegal drugs or alcoholic beverages before or during clean-up
• step or jump on trashbags

For your own safety:

• stay mentally alert at all times
• wear light-coloured clothing that covers arms and legs
• wear a baseball cap or wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen lotion
• wear gloves
• drink lots of fluids while you work 
• be aware of any specail needs of fellow volunteers (i.e., medical)
• avoid over-excertion
• stay alert for and avoid hazardous plants and stinging insects
• keep an adequate supply of garbage bags on hand

In case of emergency:

• have a first-aid kit available 
• pre-select the most direct route to the nearest medical facility
• always have transportation immediately available
• know where the nearest phone is located
